About this tool

Choose a barcode format, type your data and download the result. Check digits for EAN and UPC codes are calculated for you, and invalid input is explained instead of producing a barcode that will not scan.

Which format should I use? Code 128 is the best general-purpose choice for text and numbers, such as inventory labels and shipping. EAN-13 and UPC-A are for retail products sold in stores. Code 39 is common for ID badges and industry use. ITF is used on shipping cartons. EAN-8 is for very small packages.

Printing tips: keep dark bars on a light background, leave blank space on both sides, and avoid very thin bars. Download SVG when you need to print at different sizes. Everything runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use these barcodes on retail products?

The barcodes are valid, but retail products need numbers assigned by GS1 so they are unique worldwide. Do not invent EAN or UPC numbers for products you sell in stores.

What is a check digit?

The last digit of EAN and UPC codes, calculated from the other digits, which lets scanners detect misreads. This tool adds it automatically.

Why does my barcode not scan?

Make sure there is strong contrast, enough empty space on both sides, and bars wider than 1 px. Dark bars on a light background work best.

Code 128 or Code 39?

Code 128 is denser and supports more characters, so it is usually the better choice. Use Code 39 only if your system requires it.
